Zambian art has historically been created for functional or ceremonial purposes, using raw materials and colors that reflect the natural environment. Craftsmen in Southern Zambia are renowned for their skill in basket weaving. Thandiwe’s portrait is inspired by Tonga baskets from the region. They are made from the Ilala palm and often feature a lightning pattern.
