Emna Mizouni
Emna Mizouni is a prominent Tunisian human rights activist, freelance journalist, communications expert, and business executive. Raised in Tunis, Mizouni graduated from the Lycée Khaznadar and later from the École supérieure de commerce in Tunis, with degrees in management and marketing, which have been applied in her various roles, including work with the British Council. Mizouni has also led many initiatives with Wikimedia, such as photo contests and the MedinaPedia project. Additionally, Mizouni is active in women’s rights, digital literacy for marginalized groups, and social business through her involvement with the Karama network, Digital Citizenship, and Global Shapers, Tunis.
Mizouni founded Carthagina in March 2013 to promote Tunisia’s cultural heritage domestically and internationally. In July 2019, following her instrumental role in preparing RightsCon Tunis, she was appointed to the global board of directors of Access Now, an international human rights organization advocating for an open Internet. Her leadership in Arab and African communities earned her the Wikimedian of the Year 2019 award at the Wikimedia Conference in Stockholm.
Surrounding Emna are olive leaves and palm trees, representing peace, resilience, and the richness of Tunisian heritage. Incorporating the traditional Amazigh forehead tattoo with the Tanit symbol, the patron goddess of Carthage, underscores the deep cultural roots and strength of Tunisian women. Additionally, a line from the celebrated poet and activist Sghayer Wlad Hmed, “I love the country as no one else loves the country,” is inscribed to highlight the profound love and dedication this activist has for her homeland.
