José “Pepe” Mujica is a former political prisoner who became the 40th president of Uruguay. He is known for his humble lifestyle, straightforward manner, and progressive policies. Mujica gained international recognition for donating 90% of his salary to charities that benefit the poor and living on a modest farm rather than in the presidential palace. As president, Mujica focused on social welfare, education, and the environment. He also gained attention for his liberal stance on issues like the legalization of marijuana, same-sex marriage, and abortion. Mujica’s presidency is often highlighted for its emphasis on simplicity, austerity, and social justice.

In 2012, under Mujica’s leadership, Uruguay became the first country to legalize marijuana in an effort to treat addiction and weaken the drug cartels. He was nominated twice for a Nobel Peace Prize for his legalization efforts.

Post-Impressionism thrived in Uruguay in the early 20th century with the internationally celebrated work of Pedro Figari leading the charge. The paintings of this period strive to convey emotion and symbolism over naturalism.
